Media diet for March 2025
I watched 9h 40m of movies and 96h 3m of TV shows, a total of 105h 43m:
🎬 Movies
- Watchmen: Chapter II (2024) – ⭐️ 7/10
- Watched the first part on the last day of February and started March by finishing part two. Good stuff, ending stronger than it starts. I guess I’m just a sucker for all things Watchmen. I enjoyed the comics, I loved the 2019 mini-series and think both the theatrical and the Director’s Cut of Snyder’s movie adaptation are great. (The Ultimate Cut is rubbish, though.)
- Operation Finale (2018) – ⭐️ 4/10
- After finishing the podcast about Victor Klemperer’s diaries I was reading up a lot on the history around that time. It seems like every couple of years something triggers my desire to refresh and broaden my knowledge about my countries darkest time. In some related discussion this movie was recommended, and as per usual with “historical” dramas/thrillers I felt it was mostly a waste of time. I spent twice as long as the movie goes on for on reading up on Eichmann, watching actual footage from the trial and similar authentic material – infinitely more (in)formative.
- The Gorge (2025) – ⭐️ 4/10
- What a depressing waste of good talent. Add to the never-ending list of things that could be so much better without [insert spoiler here]. Pathetic for Apple TV+ to release barely-above-Sharknado stuff like this given their supposed quality over quantity approach, but what isn’t a blatant lie over there these days.
- Queer (2024) – ⭐️ 2/10
- Good lord, what a thoroughly joyless experience. Absolutely not for me.
- Cashback (2007) – ⭐️ 6/10
- Plenty to like here (and I’m not just talking about what the cover promises), but not quite as compelling a complete package as it could be.
📺 TV Shows
- Four Weddings and a Funeral – Miniseries (10 episodes with 8h 20m)
- Eh. Kinda cute, but nothing special.
- Wolf Like Me – Both seasons (13 episodes with 5h 35m)
- Stark contrast to the above: A somewhat unique thing. Good cast, and worth watching just for how Queens of the Stone Age songs feature both on the score and within the show itself. Shame it got cancelled, there was more to be explored here – but the ending kinda works regardless.
- The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret – All 3 seasons (18 episodes with 6h 38m)
- Figured I’d give this a try after Arrested Development last month. What an incredibly odd show. I can’t say I enjoyed watching it. At all.
- Boston Legal – All 5 seasons (101 episodes with 72h 0m)
- I was in the mood for some Shatner, and this sure delivered. It had been a while since I committed to an “old-school” show with multiple seasons of 20+ 42min episodes, but I’m glad to have watched it. I had no idea how ridiculous and over-the-top this show was. My expectation was for something much more serious, but almost every single episode has a court case with the highest possible stakes and “our guys” basically win all the time. It was a bit odd at first, but the cast grows on you quickly and makes it easy to embrace the campiness.

📚 Books
- The Jennifer Morgue [Laundry Files #2] – ⭐️ 3/5
- Pimpf [Laundry Files #2.1] – ⭐️ 2.5/5
- Down on the Farm [Laundry Files #2.5] – ⭐️ 3/5
- Equoid [Laundry Files #2.9] – ⭐️ 2/5
Uh oh, seems I forgot I gave a 2.5 rating somewhere – and I’m not sure all my systems actually allow for half-stars. Gonna have to check on that. I liked the second novel in The Laundry Files series more than the first, despite giving both a 3/5 (maybe I need half-stars). Didn’t care much for that final short story between the second and third novel, but I really appreciate that the author keeps an updated chronology on his own website as he keeps adding to the series.
🎙️ Podcasts
I listened to 21 episodes across 6 podcasts in March 2025:
- Inside Austria
- If Books Could Kill
- Die Geschichte geht weiter - Victor Klemperers Tagebücher 1918-1959
- Tagebücher 1945-1947 - Chaos (12/15)
- Tagebücher 1948-1952 - „Zwischen allen Stühlen“ (13/15)
- Tagebücher 1952-1959 - Das Ende des Frühlings (14/15)
- Bonusfolge - Die Sowjetische Besatzungszone und die DDR (15/15)
- 🇩🇪 In spite of how German this production was, it has been one of the most interesting pieces of contemporary history I’ve experienced in a while. Needless to say that re-experiencing the rise (and luckily fall) of the Third Reich through Klemperer’s reports is terrifyingly chilling given *wildly gestures at everything*. A fair number of my friends listened to it as well and found it just as engrossing – we’ve had many interesting discussions and insights thanks to it.
